John Karlem Riess papers, 1866-2002 (bulk 1920s-1990s)

This collection consists of the personal and professional papers of John Karlem "Ducky" Riess, research materials relating to his publications, offprints of articles and other printed material, correspondence, family papers, photographs, stamps, drawings, clippings, and awards. Documents concerning his research on John Leonard Riddell are included. John Riess, the father of John Karlem Riess, was a local contractor and some of his business papers are also included in the collection, as well as papers of Alma Sirera Riess (mother), Mary Riess (sister), Oscar Riess (uncle), and Viola Sirera Ransmeier (aunt).

John Karlem "Ducky" Riess (1913-2005) served as professor of physics at Tulane University (1943-1978), faculty advisor to the fraternity system, and professor emeritus. Born in New Orleans, Riess graduated from Tulane University with his B.S. in Chemistry in 1933, and M.S. in Mathematics in 1935. He received a Ph.D. in Physics from Brown University in 1943. John Leonard Riddell, physician, biologist, and inventor, was born in Leyden, Mass., Feb. 20, 1807. In 1835 he was appointed professor of chemistry and botany at Cincinnati Medical College, and published his "Synopsis of the Flora of the Western States". He received an M.D. degree in 1836 from Cincinnati Medical College. He then went to New Orleans as professor of chemistry in the Medical College of Louisiana, where he worked throughout the rest of his life. In New Orleans he also became melter ...
